Goal
Bumps the macOS SDK version used by depends and Guix symbol-check tooling from 14.0 to 15.0. The minimum deployment target remains unchanged at macOS 14.0.
Problem: Upgrading Qt in depends to Qt 6.12 LTS requires the macOS 15.0 SDK or higher according to upstream Qt macOS platform requirements. The depends configuration currently pins SDK 14.0, blocking the update.
Evidence of importance:
- PR description: 'Qt 6.12, which supports deployment targets up to macOS 26, requires the macOS 15 SDK or higher. See https://doc.qt.io/qt-6.12/macos.html. This is a prerequisite for the upcoming update of Qt in depends from 6.8 LTS to 6.12 LTS.'
Scope: A two-line update touching depends/hosts/darwin.mk and contrib/guix/symbol-check.py.
Risk of a mistake: medium (build). Incorrect macOS SDK settings could cause macOS build failures or generate binaries with incompatible symbol references.

Thread notes: hebasto explained why OSX_SDK_VERSION is set independently to avoid exploding the runtime test matrix. maflcko accepted and ACKed.

| fanquake (member) | question, approach | What is the actual requirement for bumping to the 15.x SDK? | answered · author explained that configuration fails with SDK 14.0 | answered | yes | 2026-10-21: 'What is the actual requirement for the `15.x` SDK?' Status from: 2026-10-21: hebasto: 'It's hard to say from the commit message. But the configuration fails with the current `OSX_SDK_VERSION=14.0`.' |
| fanquake (member) | question, correctness | Will release binaries crash on older macOS versions if the deployment target is not also bumped to 14.4 or later? | answered · author replied that both changes are prerequisites but better considered separately | answered | yes | 2026-10-21: 'This page also claims that a deployment target of 14.4 or later is required, but you're not changing that here. Will our release binaries just crash on the older versions?' Status from: 2026-10-21: hebasto: 'Yes, both changes are prerequisites for updating Qt to 6.12. However, I thought it would be better to consider them sepa' |
| fanquake (member) | question, scope | Where is the deployment target bump change, as it does not appear in #36593? | open | answered | no | 2026-10-21: 'I don't see the other change in #36593?' |
| maflcko (member) | question, approach | Why is OSX_SDK_VERSION set to 15.0 instead of 26.1, which is the SDK version included in the sysroot? | accepted · reviewer accepted author's explanation of SDK runtime gating | answered | yes | 2026-10-22: 'Basically, I wonder why is this not 26.1 now.' Status from: 2026-10-27: maflcko: 'Any value here seems fine, given your reply.' |
| maflcko (member) | suggestion, maintenance | Remove OSX_SDK_VERSION on the next archive bump and extract the actual version from SDKSettings.json's version field | accepted · author explained why the stamped SDK version is chosen independently; reviewer accepted | answered | yes | 2026-10-22: 'Going further, this line could also be removed on the next archive bump and the actual version could simply be extracted from `SDKSettings.json`'s version field?' Status from: 2026-10-27: maflcko: 'Any value here seems fine, given your reply.' |

Card
The short text the ranking pass compares across PRs.
Updates the macOS SDK version in depends and Guix symbol verification to 15.0 while keeping the minimum supported runtime version at macOS 14.0. This is a direct prerequisite for upgrading depends to Qt 6.12 LTS in #36593, which requires the macOS 15 SDK. Impact is limited to macOS cross-compilation builds and release packaging.
